What Is Gratuity?
Gratuity is a one-time payment made to an employee on retirement, death, resignation, or termination after a minimum qualifying service period, as a token of appreciation for long service. For West Bengal state government employees under ROPA 2019, it is calculated as a fraction of final emoluments for every six-monthly period of completed service.
There's both a floor and a ceiling: a minimum of 5 years of qualifying service is generally required to become eligible, and the maximum payable gratuity is capped regardless of how high the calculated figure works out to be.
