Tracking how your General Provident Fund (GPF) grows year on year can be confusing once increments, withdrawals, and changing interest rates enter the picture. This GPF Interest Calculator gives West Bengal government employees a quick, year-wise breakdown of opening balance, contributions, interest earned, and closing balance — so you always know where your fund stands without waiting for your annual GPF statement.
What Is GPF Interest?
The General Provident Fund (GPF) is a mandatory long-term savings scheme for government employees, where a fixed share of your basic pay is deducted every month and deposited into your GPF account. Over time, this account grows in two ways: through your own monthly contributions, and through interest credited by the government each year.
The interest rate is reviewed every quarter by the Ministry of Finance, and the rate for the April–June 2026 quarter has been retained at 7.1% per annum. Because the rate can change every quarter but is usually compounded annually, most employees only see the effect of interest once a year — when their GPF statement is updated — which is exactly the gap this calculator is meant to fill.
How to Use the GPF Interest Calculator
- Opening Balance: Enter your GPF balance as it stood at the start of the financial year (1st April).
- Monthly Subscription: Enter the fixed amount deducted from your salary every month towards GPF.
- GPF Interest Rate: The current rate (7.1%) is pre-filled, but you can change it if calculating for a different year.
- Years of Subscription: Enter how many years you want the calculation to run for.
- Advance Withdrawal (optional): If you’ve taken any GPF advance, enter the amount so it’s deducted from your final closing balance.
- Calculate: Click Calculate GPF Balance & Interest to see your year-wise breakdown and closing balance.
How to Calculate GPF Interest
Monthly Interest = (Lowest Balance in the Month × Interest Rate) ÷ 1200
The official rule is that GPF interest is calculated on the lowest balance in your account between the 5th and the last day of each month, using a simple interest formula applied monthly, with the total compounded and credited once a year on 31st March.
Since most subscribers don’t track their day-to-day minimum balance, this calculator uses the standard simplified annual method instead: interest is applied to your opening balance for the full year, plus half a year’s interest on your total annual subscription (since contributions are spread evenly across the year). This gives a close, indicative estimate of your closing balance — for the exact figure credited by your office, always refer to your official GPF statement.
Benefits of the GPF Interest Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the current GPF interest rate?
The GPF interest rate for the April–June 2026 quarter has been retained at 7.1% per annum, as notified by the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance. The rate is reviewed every quarter and can change, though it has stayed at 7.1% for several consecutive quarters.
How is GPF interest calculated?
Interest is calculated on the lowest balance in your account between the 5th and the last day of each month, at one-twelfth of the annual rate. The monthly amounts accumulate through the year and are credited to your account on 31st March.
What is the minimum and maximum GPF contribution?
The minimum monthly subscription is 6% of basic pay, and the maximum is 100% of total emoluments, subject to applicable annual ceilings.
Does an advance withdrawal reduce future interest?
Yes. Once an advance is withdrawn, it reduces your account balance, which lowers the base on which future interest is calculated until the balance is restored through repayment or fresh contributions.
Is GPF interest taxable?
GPF enjoys Exempt-Exempt-Exempt (EEE) tax status — your contribution, the interest earned, and the final withdrawal at retirement are all exempt from income tax under prevailing rules.
Can I check my exact GPF balance online?
Yes, most West Bengal government departments allow employees to check their GPF balance through their office’s e-Salary or IFMS portal, or by requesting the latest passbook entry from the DDO/Accounts section.
Why does this calculator show a different figure than my official statement?
This calculator uses a simplified annual method for ease of estimation, while your official statement applies interest on the exact lowest monthly balance. Small differences of a few rupees are normal; for the official figure, always rely on your GPF passbook.
