Gratuity is one of the largest lump-sum retirement benefits a West Bengal government employee receives, but the formula behind it isn’t always obvious. This calculator works out your estimated gratuity using your last drawn Basic Pay, Dearness Allowance, and total qualifying service.
What Is Gratuity?
Gratuity is a one-time payment made to an employee on retirement, death, resignation, or termination after a minimum qualifying service period, as a token of appreciation for long service. For West Bengal state government employees under ROPA 2019, it is calculated as a fraction of final emoluments for every six-monthly period of completed service.
There’s both a floor and a ceiling: a minimum of 5 years of qualifying service is generally required to become eligible, and the maximum payable gratuity is capped regardless of how high the calculated figure works out to be.
How to Use the Gratuity Calculator
- Basic Pay: Enter your last drawn Basic Pay at the time of retirement or separation.
- DA Percentage: Enter the Dearness Allowance percentage applicable on your last working day.
- Completed Years of Service: Enter your total qualifying service in completed years.
- Calculate: Click calculate to see your estimated gratuity amount, capped at the statutory ceiling if applicable.
How to Calculate Gratuity
Gratuity = ¼ × (Basic Pay + DA) × Number of Completed Six-Monthly Periods of Service
Your last drawn Basic Pay and DA are added together to get your final emoluments. This figure is then divided by four and multiplied by the number of completed six-month service periods (so 20 years of service equals 40 such periods) to arrive at the gratuity amount.
The maximum qualifying service considered for this calculation is capped at 33 years (66 half-year periods), and the resulting gratuity amount itself is capped at ₹12,00,000 for West Bengal employees, even if the formula works out to a higher figure.
Benefits of the Gratuity Calculator

- Ceiling awareness: Know in advance whether your calculated gratuity will be capped by the statutory ceiling.
- Service verification: Cross-check your service book entries against the expected gratuity figure.
- Quick comparison: Compare gratuity outcomes across different retirement dates if you’re considering VRS.
Gratuity often forms a significant part of a retiring employee’s financial cushion, so getting a reliable early estimate matters. Use this calculator alongside your service book records, and confirm the final figure with your DDO closer to your actual date of retirement.
