Sabooj Sathi
Sabooj Sathi — meaning ‘Green Companion’ — is a landmark scheme that provides free bicycles to students in Classes 9 to 12 in government and government-aided schools. Launched in 2015, this initiative has transformed mobility for rural students and significantly improved school attendance and retention across West Bengal.
Free bicycle provided to all students in Classes 9–12. Improves school attendance especially in rural areas. Reduces transportation costs for families. Covers government and government-aided school students. Over 1 crore bicycles distributed since launch.
Students enrolled in Classes 9–12 in government or government-aided schools. Must be a resident of West Bengal. Priority to students in rural areas with poor connectivity.
No separate application required — eligible students are identified by schools. Distribution done through school premises. Students must be regular attendees. Documents: school enrollment certificate and Aadhaar card.
Sabooj Sathi has literally put wheels under the aspirations of millions of students in West Bengal. By solving the simple problem of transportation, the government has ensured that distance never becomes a reason for a child to miss school.
