For many families in West Bengal, building a permanent house remains a distant dream due to rising construction costs. To address this, the Government of West Bengal’s Housing Department launched the Gitanjali Housing Scheme. This initiative provides direct financial grants to homeless families who own land but lack the funds to build a shelter.

What is the Gitanjali Housing Scheme?

The primary goal of the Gitanjali project is to provide free, permanent shelters to the economically weaker sections of society. Beyond providing housing, the scheme also stimulates the local economy by creating employment opportunities for construction workers in rural and semi-urban areas.

Financial Assistance Breakdown

The state government provides a fixed subsidy based on the geographical location of the beneficiary’s land:

  • Plain Areas: β‚Ή70,000 per house.
  • Hilly, Coastal, and Sundarban Areas: β‚Ή75,000 per house.

Payment Method: The funds are disbursed directly into the beneficiary’s bank account in two installments through the District Magistrate’s office:

  1. First Installment: 70% of the total amount to start construction.
  2. Second Installment: The remaining 30% upon completion of the initial phase.
