WBSSC Group D Posts Explained — Peon, Night Guard & Lab Attendant

WBSSC Group D covers support-level positions in government schools. These are entry-level, permanent government posts with regular pay and pension benefits. The three main posts are Peon, Night Guard, and Laboratory Attendant.

Post 1: Peon (Group D Attendant)

  • Preventing unauthorized entry into the campus
  • Patrolling classrooms, the building, and laboratory areas
  • Reporting incidents, theft, or damage to school authorities
  • Maintaining a gate register for visitors and contractors

Education required: Minimum Class VIII (Standard 8) pass.

Pay Level: Level 2. Work involves night shifts and holiday duty on a rotational basis.

Note: This post demands physical fitness. Ex-servicemen and candidates with a security background are often preferred. Night shifts may be a consideration for candidates with travel or family constraints.


Post 3: Laboratory Attendant (Lab Attendant)

The Lab Attendant is a specialized Group D post found only in schools with science laboratories (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). It is best suited to candidates with a science background.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting science teachers in setting up laboratory experiments
  • Handling, cleaning, and maintaining laboratory instruments and glassware
  • Managing chemicals and reagents — storing and disposing of them safely

Group D Exam Pattern
